As a freelance writer for The News of Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows, I have had the opportunity to cover numerous local issues as a fill-in news and sports reporter. Here are some highlights:
Contaminated Soil: On my very first day on the job, I was thrown into the controversy surrounding Pitt Meadows’ Golden Ears Business Park expansion. This was just one of several charges levelled by citizens against the developer of the project.
Third Reading Approved: Later that month, city council approved a third reading of the amendments that would make the expansion possible. I was at the special meeting to get reactions from both sides.
Marijuana Business: A cannabis processing business wants to set up shop in Pitt Meadows, opening a whole new can of worms for the quickly growing community.
Shawna Ram: I was thrown into the deep end of sports reporting, which I hadn’t done since college. I was immediately drawn to profiling local athletes, including this MMA fighter whose whole life is literally consumed by the sport.
Vincent Savenkoff: Covering community sports gave me the opportunity to meet and write about some fantastic kids who are using sports to make a difference. I couldn’t resist covering this 13-year-old baseball star who won an inspirational athlete award.
